Trawsfynydd Power Station is located near Blaenau Ffestiniog in Snowdonia, North Wales. The power station was built beside a lake which could provide the cooling water for the power station. Trawsfynydd started electricity generation in 1965 and closed for generation in 1991. All fuel has been removed from the reactors and decommissioning is well underway.
Trawsfynydd Power Station is the only inland nuclear civil magnox power station, and is in the Snowdonia National Park.
Trawsfynydd is currently being decommissioned, and it is planned that it will enter Care and Maintenance by 2012.
New buildings will provide the facilities needed to manage wastes held on-site. A store will be built for ILW pending a long-term storage solution for it.
Decommissioning work will continue within the reactor buildings, to remove redundant equipment. This work will enable the reactor building to move to the care and maintenance preparations. Surface scabbling works in the fuel cooling ponds will lower any remaining hazards. Trawsfynydd (referred to as Trawsfyndd, or Traws ) is currently working to its planed date of transfer to Care & Maintenance.
